Induced defences are protective responses that a plant activates or strengthens after detecting herbivore feeding, physical damage, or infection by a pathogen. Responses can include producing defensive chemicals, strengthening cell walls, releasing volatile compounds, or activating signalling pathways that increase resistance in other parts of the plant.
Unlike constitutive defences, which are continuously present, induced defences allow plants to invest more heavily in protection when a threat occurs.
