A food web is a network of interconnected food chains that shows how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem. Unlike a food chain, which follows a single feeding path, a food web illustrates the many feeding relationships between plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and other organisms.
In gardens, food webs include producers such as plants, consumers such as insects, birds, and mammals, and decomposers such as fungi, bacteria, and earthworms. These interactions influence pollination, pest populations, nutrient cycling, and soil health. A diverse food web is generally more resilient because multiple species can perform similar ecological roles if one population declines.
