About The Unlikely Gardener
An Overview of this site and the Facebook Plant Hoarders (Anonymous) Group.
Welcome to The Unlikely Gardener — where curiosity meets chlorophyll and where your questions become content ideas that helps the gardening community bloom.
What began as a humble Facebook Group on December 9th, 2023, has rapidly grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined. With nearly 200,000 plant lovers in our Plant Hoarders community and counting, we’re building something special — together.
Whether you’re a newbie trying to figure out why your Alocasia might be dying again, or a long-time grower knee-deep in Vapor Pressure Deficit calculations, you’re in the right place.
What We Do
At The Unlikely Gardener, we mix science with sass and help demystify the often-confusing world of plant care. Our blog — 50 Shades of Green — is packed with in-depth newbie guides and geek-friendly content that dives into everything from grow light optimization to Daily Light Integral (DLI) calculations.
We also build and share custom plant tools like:
- Energy Cost Calculators
- VPD and DLI Calculators to help you fine-tune your environment
- Our fan-favourite Grow Light PPFD/PAR Map Generator
All of these tools were born from your questions, feedback, and shared love of all things green.
Why We Exist
Let’s be real — most plant and gardening advice online is lacking any depth or understanding. We aim to hit the sweet spot: science-backed, no-nonsense content that actually helps you to understand what makes a difference in your home and garden, and why.
We’re here for the everyday plant parent who’s tired of vague care tips and wants real answers. No gatekeeping, no gurus — just a thriving community that learns and grows together.

Thanks for being here. Let’s grow something awesome — one plant at a time.
