A root trainer is a type of plant container designed to guide developing roots downward and outward rather than allowing them to circle. It typically has vertical ribs and an open or perforated base that directs roots toward air exposure, where the tips dry and stop elongating, a process called air pruning.
This structure promotes a dense, fibrous root system with many lateral branches, which improves transplant success and reduces root binding. Root trainers are commonly used for seedlings and young plants, especially species that benefit from strong early root architecture.
