Root exudates are organic compounds released by living roots into the surrounding soil. These substances include sugars, amino acids, organic acids, enzymes, phenolic compounds, and other molecules that influence the chemical and biological environment around the root system.
Root exudates help shape the rhizosphere, the zone of soil directly affected by roots. They can attract beneficial microbes, support mycorrhizal fungi, alter nutrient availability, suppress competitors, and influence interactions with both beneficial and pathogenic organisms. Plants may also adjust the type and amount of exudates they release in response to nutrient deficiencies, environmental stress, or microbial activity.
A significant portion of the carbon captured through photosynthesis can be transferred below ground as root exudates. This flow of carbon helps fuel soil microbial communities and plays an important role in nutrient cycling and soil ecosystem function.
