Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are unstable forms of oxygen that are naturally produced inside plant cells. In small amounts, they help the plant respond to stress and protect itself.
When stress is too high, such as from strong light, drought, or heat, ROS can build up and damage cells. This can show up as leaf burn, spots, or faster aging. Healthy plants keep ROS under control, but imbalance leads to visible problems.
