The null hypothesis (H₀) is the default assumption that there is no real effect, difference, or relationship between the variables being studied. Statistical tests evaluate whether the observed data provide enough evidence to reject this assumption.
Rejecting the null hypothesis does not prove an alternative hypothesis is true. It indicates only that the observed results are unlikely to have occurred if the null hypothesis were correct.
