Nitrate Reductases

Enzymes in plants that begin the process of turning nitrate absorbed from the soil into a usable form of nitrogen. They convert nitrate (NO₃⁻) into nitrite (NO₂⁻), an early step that eventually allows the plant to produce amino acids, proteins, and other molecules needed for growth. Without nitrate reductase, plants could take up nitrate but would not be able to use it to build new tissues.
