A form of nitrogen commonly found in soil and water that plants absorb through their roots as a key nutrient. Nitrate supplies nitrogen needed to build amino acids, proteins, and chlorophyll, all of which are essential for plant growth. After uptake, plants convert nitrate into other nitrogen compounds they can use to form new tissues.
