Palisade mesophyll cells are tightly packed, elongated cells near the top of the leaf. They receive the most light and do most of the photosynthesis.
Spongy mesophyll cells are more loosely arranged and sit below the palisade layer. They have air spaces between them, which helps gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen move through the leaf.
