Lamina

The lamina is the broad, usually flattened portion of a leaf, commonly called the leaf blade. It is the main surface where light is intercepted and where most photosynthesis, gas exchange, and transpiration occur.

The lamina may be simple or divided and can vary widely in shape, thickness, texture, margin, and venation. It is typically connected to the stem by a petiole, although some leaves are sessile and attach directly to the stem.
