Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a strategy for preventing and managing plant pests by combining multiple control methods while minimizing unnecessary pesticide use. Rather than relying on routine spraying, IPM emphasizes monitoring, correct pest identification, and selecting the least disruptive control method that will effectively manage the problem.

IPM may include cultural controls, such as proper watering and sanitation; physical controls, such as removing infested leaves or using sticky traps; biological controls, such as beneficial insects; and chemical controls when other methods are insufficient. Pesticides are used only when needed and are chosen to target the pest while reducing risks to people, beneficial organisms, and the environment.

The goal of IPM is not to eliminate every pest, but to keep pest populations below levels that cause unacceptable damage while maintaining healthy plants and a balanced growing environment.
