An influx transporter is a membrane protein that moves substances into a cell from the surrounding environment. In plants, influx transporters are embedded in cell membranes and selectively import water, nutrients, ions, sugars, hormones, and other molecules needed for growth and metabolism.
Influx transporters are often highly specific, recognizing particular molecules and transporting them across the membrane either passively or by using energy stored in ion gradients. Their activity helps regulate nutrient uptake, internal nutrient distribution, signaling, and responses to environmental conditions.
A well-known example is the silicon transporter Lsi1, an influx transporter found in the roots of many silicon-accumulating plants. Lsi1 facilitates the movement of monosilicic acid from the soil solution into root cells. In species that efficiently accumulate silicon, influx transporters work alongside efflux transporters such as Lsi2, which move silicon onward toward the vascular system.
Influx transporters differ from efflux transporters, which move substances out of cells. Together, they control the directional movement of materials throughout the plant.
