Hydraulic Capacity

Hydraulic capacity is the ability of a plant’s vascular system to transport water from roots to leaves. It reflects how easily water moves through xylem tissue, influenced by factors such as vessel size, density, and continuity.

In indoor and outdoor plants, hydraulic capacity affects how well a plant can keep leaves hydrated under demand from light, heat, or low humidity. Reduced capacity, from drought stress, root damage, or embolisms (air blockages in xylem), limits water flow and can lead to wilting or slowed growth.
