Homologues

Homologues are genes, proteins, or other biological structures that share a common evolutionary origin. Because they descended from the same ancestral sequence, homologues often have similar structures and may perform similar functions, although their roles can diverge over time.

In plant biology, the term is commonly used when comparing genes or proteins across different species. For example, many plants possess homologues of the silicon transporters Lsi1 and Lsi2. While these homologous proteins may have evolved from a common ancestor, they do not always transport silicon with the same efficiency. Differences in structure, expression, or cellular location can lead to substantial differences in silicon accumulation among species.

Homologues are generally classified as orthologues or paralogues. Orthologues arise when species diverge from a common ancestor and often retain similar functions, while paralogues arise through gene duplication within a species and may evolve new or specialized roles.

The presence of a homologue does not guarantee identical function. Closely related proteins can differ significantly in activity, regulation, or substrate specificity.
