Cytokinins

Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones that primarily promote cell division (cytokinesis) and influence many aspects of plant growth and development. They were first identified in the 1950s during experiments on plant tissue culture when compounds that stimulated cell division were isolated.

Cytokinins are produced mainly in the root apical meristems and transported upward through the xylem to shoots and leaves. Smaller amounts can also be synthesized in developing fruits, seeds, and young leaves.
