Chimney etiolation in cacti and some succulents occurs when they don’t receive enough light, causing them to grow unnaturally tall, narrow, and stretched instead of staying compact and well-shaped. The new growth often appears lighter in color and weaker, which can lead to bending or breakage. Because these plants are adapted to strong sunlight, placing them in a bright, sunny location or under a grow light helps maintain their natural form and prevents this elongated, “chimney-like” growth.
