A series of chemical reactions in the chloroplasts of plants that uses energy from photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide from the air into sugars. The cycle uses energy molecules produced in the light reactions of photosynthesis to fix carbon and build simple carbohydrates that the plant uses for growth and metabolism. RuBisCO is the key enzyme that begins this process by capturing carbon dioxide.
