Bacillus subtilis

Bacillus subtilis is a naturally occurring, soil-dwelling bacterium commonly found in the rhizosphere and on plant surfaces. It is widely used in agriculture and horticulture as a biological control agent because it can colonize roots and leaves while competing with certain plant pathogens.

B. subtilis helps suppress diseases through several mechanisms. It can produce antimicrobial compounds that inhibit fungi and bacteria, compete with pathogens for space and resources, form protective biofilms on root surfaces, and stimulate aspects of a plant’s natural defense system. Different commercial products may contain different strains, and their effectiveness can vary considerably depending on the strain, crop, environment, and target disease.

Unlike fertilizers, B. subtilis does not directly provide significant nutrients to plants. Its primary value is in disease suppression, root-zone ecology, and promoting a healthier microbial community around roots.
