Apical growth is new growth that occurs from the tip of a stem or root. In indoor plants and garden plants, it is how shoots get longer, roots extend through soil, and new leaves or buds form at growing points.
The growing tip contains meristem tissue, which is made of actively dividing cells. When an apical bud is intact, it often suppresses some side growth below it, a pattern called apical dominance.
